Author, historian, poet and artist, Cheryl Bruno, invited me to present with her at Sunstone this year. Our presentation was officially called "151. Mormon Tarot and its Implications for Past, Present and Future". I focussed my part of the presentation on the evolution of the tarot, why esotericism resonates with some mormons and how I've been aligning the traditional tarot to the mormon tarot.
I want to be fair to Sunstone so this is exclusively my portion of the presentation, filmed on my camera and taped with my audio recorder....I am currently editing the full video with Cheryl Bruno's presentation and Q&A. Sunstone will be hosting that video on their platform and the Whova app until the end of the year. It was so great to chat with Kendall and Camilla! and I think I saw Barbara's name in the Whova app. Were any more of you at the conference or on Whova?...Unfortunately the sound and image quality of the broadcast were sub par so here's a pretty clean edit of what I covered. Let me know if you have any questions, and feel free to chime in if I got something wrong or if you want to share some tarot facts that I didn't mention.

A number of people have generously reached out to me and asked how they can help with this project. First of all, thanks for reaching out! It means the world to me and is a great source of encouragement and motivation. I've decided to use Buy Me A Coffee for small donations and Patreon for subscription based donations... Patreon is a great way to support independent artists, podcasters and other creators on a subscription basis. The concept is very simple: creators offer tiered levels of support in exchange for exclusive content and other special benefits. Each patron chooses the level that best suits their interests and their pocketbook. CLICK HERE to become a patron of the Mormon Tarot. Just wanted to let you know: Mormon related tarot creators: Cheryl Bruno, Gazelam Ale, and I will be presenting at this year's symposium on mormonism and tarot. The presentation "Mormonism and Western Esotericism" by my friends Ed Goble, Trevor Luke and Kerry Shirts should also be quite interesting.
Imagine the Catholic Church painting over the Sistine Chapel walls and ceiling... The world would not allow it! Even if the paint was falling off the walls (like in Da Vinci's Last Supper) we would find a way to preserve the work. Ironically, it was a Japanese TV network that donated over 4 million dollars to restore the Sistine Chapel frescoes in exchange for filming access. This news that the LDS church will be removing the murals from the SLC and Manti temples feels like an unnecessary and devastating loss. This move is totally unexpected from an organization that places so much emphasis on heritage. The movement to sterilize, modernize and integrate Mormonism into the mainstream of christian culture moves forward, but at what cost? I'm guessing the Parable of the Olive Tree (Jacob 5) was used to justify this decision. It feels like 21st century Mormonism is attempting to conquer 20th century Mormonism, after it attempted to conquer 19th century Mormonism. It is obviously necessary for organizations to molt as they grow, but this feels a bit more like self amputation. Within the specific sphere of Mormon art, I would argue it's a lot more like losing a limb or an eye than losing a layer of old dead skin. My hope is that the murals are somehow preserved and put up for display in other more publically accessible locations. The amazing Sara Katherine Staheli Hanks (from Cottonwood Tarot) and I will be presenting at Sunstone SLC 2019! Our session will be on Saturday, August 3, from 2-2:30 pm. Hope to see you there...REGISTER HERE.
Huge thanks to all the folks at Sunstone for this opportunity. This is truly an honor. And to have Greg Prince's cover story be about owning your religion is absolutely perfect! It's what this project is all about. BTW, I've heard this might be the last printed issue of the magazine. They need our support if the magazine is to continue. Let's not make the issue number 187 prophetic. You can support them here: https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/donate/
Huge thanks to all the folks at Sunstone 2018 for putting on such a great event...I'm already looking forward to next year.
I'm so delighted by this! The award on its own is great, but having it come from this source is all the more exciting.
The MT booth at Sunstone 2017. Such a great time! For those of you who ordered cards and posters, I'll be sending them off next week. Over 100 people signed up for the newsletter and expressed interest in purchasing a deck when it's finished. 100+ emails is way more than I anticipated! I hope to have many more cards finished for next year's Sunstone, and I'll have many more posters on hand for sale. Hope to see you there.
The process of "Divination" has been around as long as humans have been around. We actually use it everyday. Here's a fascinating perspective on what it's really all about and how it works: (This article is about the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. For other persons, see Joseph Smith (disambiguation).) Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) was an American religious leader and founder of Mormonism and the Latter Day Saint movement. When he was twenty-four, Smith published the Book of Mormon. By the time of his death fourteen years later, he had attracted tens of thousands of followers and founded a religious culture that continues to the present. Smith was born in Sharon, Vermont, but by 1817, he had moved with his family to the burned-over district of western New York, an area of intense religious revivalism during the Second Great Awakening. According to Smith, he experienced a series of visions, including one in which he saw "two personages" (presumably God the Father and Jesus Christ) and others in which an angel named Moroni directed him to a buried book of golden plates inscribed with a Judeo-Christian history of an ancient American civilization. In 1830, Smith published what he said was an English translation of these plates, the Book of Mormon... CLICK TO READ MORE
Today, I was supposed to work on our flagstone patio. I've been gathering motivational energy over the last few days to get out there in the cold and start cutting and moving heavy stone. Unfortunately, it was snowing this morning so I decided instead to design a mormon themed tarot deck...
